Can you fire a 357 round out of a 38 long colt pistol?

No. .38 Long Colt was the forerunner to .38 Special- and was originally a black powder cartridge. The .38 Special is more powerful- the .357 magnum is MUCH more powerful. Neither the Special nor the magnum should be fired in a gun chambered for .38 Long Colt. This is VERY dangerous.

Why cant you put .357 magnum in a 38 special?

The case is longer.MUCH LONGER.For very good reasons.Even though diameter wise they are compatible the .357 carries much higher pressures. The .38 is based upon black powder numbers. Originally, a round was manufactured that was loaded to .357 magnum power, but in a .38 size casing. The Result: blown up guns.

Witch black powder is better smokless powder or regular black powder?

Black powder and smokeless powder are two totally different animals. For all intents smokeless is meant for loading cartridges and black powder is used for muzzle loading fire arms. Black powder can also be used in cartridge loads. You have heard terms referring to a gun in 45-70 on 38-20 or 44-40 calibers. Those numbers refer to the caliber (45) and the amount of black powder in the cartridge (70 grains) Smokeless powder should NEVER be used in place of black powder in muzzle loaders, or in the same volume as black powder in cartridge loads. So depending on what you are shooting both powders have there place.

In firearm cartridges what do the numbers represent ieWinchester 3840 what is 38 what is 40?

The 38 means that it is a 38 caliber bullet, the 40 is a left over from the old black powder days. It represents the approximate equivelant power that 40 grains of black powder would have given a similar bullet, although the actual cartridge was loaded with the 'new' smokless powder. The 30-30 was one of the first cartridges to use this system as the smokless powders were being introduced in the late 1800's.

How much does a smith Wesson 38 special ctg weight?

Just the projectile, just the case, just the powder, just the primer or the entire loaded round?

What is a 30-30 caliber?

Early on in the development of black powder cartridge guns, the calibers were numbered by the bore diameter in inches with the second number being the powder charge weight in grains of black powder. Therefore, .30-30 is a .30 inch (caliber) bullet with a powder charge of 30 grains of black powder. Other calibers of the black powder cartridge era include the following examples: .25-20, .38-40, .44-40, .38-55, .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, etc. It's interesting that some of these cartridge names lived on to the current day, even though they are loaded with smokeless powders. Even the grand old "thutty thutty" as it's known in New England.

How much times does 38 go into 81 and estimate 38 to a easier number?

round 38 to 40 and get 80 by multiplying. Then, do 38 x 2 and you’d have to round to get about the same answer.

Where do you find 38 black powder ammo for hopkins and Allen 38 safety police Revolver Longview kilgore Texas Area?

You are unlikely to find black powder carridges stocked in any stores in the US. They are a specialty cartridge. You might try a source such as The Old Western Scrounger unless these are .38 RIMFIRE. Many of the H&A guns were rimfires- and that is an obsolete cartridge no longer in production. PLEASE have your H&A checked by a pistolsmith before shooting ANYTHING in it-

Can you shoot regular 38 caliber ammunition in a 38 special?

NO, a 38 Special is actually .357 caliber. NO, a 38 Special is actually .357 caliber. A 38 special is NOT a 357 magnum. Both bullet heads are about .357 in diameter. The difference between the 38 and 357 is the length of the brass case. The 357 brass case is a bit longer then the 38 special case, and the gun powder load is a bit higher then the 38 special load...... Further, you can shoot a 38 special case in the 357 magnum revolver, however, you cannot fire a 357 magnum round in the 38 special. The 38 special cylinder is too short for the 357 round......
