Can a felon in west Virginia carry a black powder rifle?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, felons can now purchase and possess Black Powder firearms in West Virginia. Senate Bill 419, 2021 session passed into law and was signed by the governor. The law is in the WV Code 61.7.1, 61.7.7

The definition of the law was changed and black powder revolvers and any muzzleloader can be purchased and possessed by felons as they are no longer considered firearms. Revolvers must be pre 1898, and black powder cap and ball revolvers only. Read the law or contact a 2nd Amendment lawyer in WV for legal advice.

There's a little blue pocket-sized book, "Colts Date of Manufacture: 1837-1978" by R.L. Wilson that has serial numbers listed by model and date. Very handy. The information in the book shows up on the Web now and then, just google "colt serial numbers," and see what you find.

Is there a site you can enter a serial number for a gun and get its history?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. If you know the manufacturer and model some information may be available. Several enthusiast sites have lists that identify the year of manufacture by serial number for some popular models. The Springfield Research Center site has compiled a very incomplete list of serial numbers that have verified military history, but even there a hit will probably only give a date it was issued, inventoried, or disposed of by a unit.

Is gun powder and black powder the same?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer

yes, a muzzle loader and black powder are just two different names for the same thing.

Black powder is a term that also includes a category of guns that fire black powder cartridges. So these guns were breech loaders and do not load from the muzzle. Also the early black powder revolvers were loaded by ramming the charge into the cylinders---not the muzzle. These could also be referred to as black powder pistols and not muzzle loaders.

I just call them "smoke poles" myself.

Also, the early Colt pistols fired black powder and a ball. These are called "black powder pistols" or "cap and ball pistols". If I was referring to shooting a Colt, I would say I shoot a black powder gun; I would not refer to it as a muzzle-loader.

How much is a Jukar Spain 45 cal black powder pistol serial number 159489 worth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The generally sell in the $125 to $200 range depending on condition.

The best way to determine actual value is to search the on-line auctions, such as gun broker and auction arms or even proxibid enter your details in the search and see what is selling and for how much. You can also search the archives and or sold items to get an idea of what your gun is selling for. Another place to look is The blue book of modern black powder values, available from midway USA and blue book publications as well as many of the other hunting and firearm stores. Also available to NRA members on - line for free on there web page. That will give you an idea of the general value. Guns tend to have some regional value too, say a Thompson Center Seneca may be worth a bit more in the north east than in the mid west, and a Ruger old army may sell higher in the northwest than the east coast. Don't forget condition has allot to do with value, and with black powder the bore is king. You may have a gun worth for example $500, but the same gun with a bad or rusted bore may only be worth $150 so compare apples to apples.

You did not say what brand- Hawken style rifles were made by several companies. Traditional sidelock rifles are not as popular as they once were- due to the in line muzzleloaders. If it is a T/C Hawken, around $200 would be a good price. PS- I love mine.
