Where can you buy black powder shotgun shells?

"There is no such thing as a black powder shot gun shell, for shot guns they loaded it the same as a regular musket only instead of a single ball they put multiple smaller balls."

The above answer is wrong. At least after 1870.

Early shotgun shells during the 19th century were filled with black powder, switching to smokeless powder in the early 20th century. Black powder is still used today in blank shotshells, and is available. Look for Black powder shotshells on google.

Black Powder Shotgun Shells

" The conventional shotgun cartridge is designed for black powder. It was invented around 1870 when black powder was the only kind of gunpowder that anyone had ever heard of. They didn't even call it "black" powder. It works just fine with black powder, and can still be loaded with black powder today. Here is how."

Black powder shells were not normally factory-loaded. The empty hulls were available for loading by the user. Originally, black powder shotgun shells were paper or all brass. By all brass, I mean they were brass from the head all the way to the end. Paper shells only last through one firing. The all brass shells can be reloaded over and over again; the all-brass shells supposedly don't wear out. There is a lot of information on the net about loading this type of shell. They are available from a couple of manufacturers, including MagTech.

You could try looking up places that sell to "Cowboy Action Shooters." Those types of outfitters are the most likely to have what you're looking for.

Goex is a black powder manufacturer and also makes black powder shotgun shells.

To buy black powder 12 ga. shells look up Buffalo Arms on the internet.

Can a gun barrel be made from iron pipe?

Certain high pressure plumbing pipe will work for black powder guns, and is sometimes used by re-enactors. Do not attempt this without consulting with an expert. It can be lethal. Pressures on these rarely exceed 10,000 PSI

"Zip guns" can be made out of a variety of pipe, but the same warnings apply.

Early gun barrels were made from steeled iron wrapped around a form, or wound around a form (so-called "damascus" or twist barrels).

Modern firearms use alloy steels which are forged and machined. Not poured and cast pig iron. The usual alloys are 416 stainless, or the 4130-4150 range of chrome-molybdenum steels.

Modern gun barrels have to withstand up to 70,000 psi (pounds per square inch).

Iron pipe is mainly used for rainwater soak aways... go figure

What is the value of a Thompson Center Arms 54 caliber percussion cap Renegade Model 7404 muzzle loader?

The most accurate way to have your T/C appraised is to bring to an actual appraisor. If your not fortunate enough to have one on speed dial (as most of us) then you can have it just as accurately priced at a dealer or gunshop. Auctions can also provide numbers but they can also be missleading. Two men walk intop the auction hall with each's eye set on that one gun, one say 2! The next 4! And before you know it your at 10!!! Just because its worth a million to him doesnt mean it really IS. I suppose you could have it appraised via internet but it is always better for the pricer to see it in person. this way they can observe and dings or niks that a photo may have neglected to display. BUT! Seeing it in person can also prove to be beneficial for you. Your gun may have some tiny detail that the camera didnt catch that could make it a one of a kind and worth more. Now that todays lesson is over I mine as well tell you FINALLY that your gun is only going to be worth $160 to a dealer but mabee more at an auction or to some dim witted chum who you can manage to swinddle (BUT I dont condone this, of course unless he deserves it). Fun Fact: If shooting at a downhill slope from atop the hill, aim slightly lower. this will prove accurate due to the difference in the gravitaional pull on your projectile because of the change in gravity. More Vertical Tilt=Less Gravity. (compensation)

How do you find the value of my antique gun?

you must furnish th makers name, overall condition of gun and bore. Also the serial number and caliber. Most markings are on top of barrel. value would depend on overall condition and the maker.

You can contact a firearms auction house, supply that information above plus some photos and get some free advice on what it would bring at auction. That is a good indicator of your guns value.

Can a felon carry a black powder pistol in new york?

The federal laws governing firearms do not classify muzzleloaders as a "firearm" , and in most states you can buy one with no paperwork or background check. However that does not make it technically legal for a felon to poses it. I have read of cases pertaining to this where the person was hassled at great expense in time and money by local law enforcement regardless of the intended use, only to be convicted on possession of explosives charges for having black powder. The "best practice" I have heard of is obtaining a waiver from BATFE or your local jurisdiction so you have paper in hand showing proof of legal possession, after all it is not worth your time, money or potential freedom dealing with an over zealous prosecutor or non gun friendly jurisdiction when a simple document could prevent it. This topic has been discussed at length for years both pro and con, and what it boils down to is a case by case determination. You can go to free advice.com ( http://forum.freeadvice.com/other-crimes-federal-state-4/ex-felons-black-powder-weapons-legal-386903.html) or better yet to the BATF site ( http://www.atf.gov/firearms/index.htm) and get a more direct answer for your state and county, but the best advice would be to speak to an authority in your state or to BATFE to be 100% sure.

What is the going price of a Thompson Center 50 cal Tree Hawk muzzleloader?

The best way to determine actual value is to search the on-line auctions, such as www.gunbroker.com and www.auctionarms.com or even www.proxibid.com enter your details in the search and see what is selling and for how much. You can also search the archives and or sold items to get an idea of what your gun is selling for. Another place to look is The blue book of modern black powder values, available from www.midwayusa.com and www.bluebookpublications.com as well as many of the other hunting and firearm stores. Also available to NRA members on - line for free at www.nragive.org That will give you an idea of the general value. Guns tend to have some regional value too, say a Thompson Center Seneca may be worth a bit more in the north east than in the mid west, and a Ruger old army may sell higher in the northwest than the east coast. Don't forget condition has allot to do with value, and with black powder the bore is king. You may have a gun worth for example $500, but the same gun with a bad or rusted bore may only be worth $150 so compare apples to apples.

How do you fire a dikar spain 45 cal black powder only?

I am no expert, but i have the same cannon. the way i shoot it is First ram rod into it to make sure it is clean and there are no remaining embers from the last shot. Second i cut a length of cannon fuse and stick it in the little hole all the way in till it stops. Third measure out black powder i think 3 1/2 grams is what a 45 handgun shot would have. Pour it into the end of the cannon while holding the cannon straight up and down so it fills evenly in the but of the barrel. At this point sometimes i take a wad of paper towel and ram it down in tight to the powder to hold it all together. Now you can shoot it to try it out blank. To shoot something out of it you get it to this point and then I use a 44 cal. round ball and a cloth round wadding that i have to cut down because it is too big the way it comes. I also sometimes put some bbs in instead of a ball and then ram another wadding of paper towel to hold them in place till you are ready to shoot.

Can a felon own a black powder rifle in South Dakota?

Yes, But it must be a black powder gun patented before 1894. No gun that takes any kind of a shell or cartidge is allowed. This law applies to all 50 states.

The U.S. Code Title 18 states that (I am paraphrasing) muzzle loading pistols and rifles are classified the same as black powder guns 'patented before 1894' though the law uses 'in or before 1898' as long as they are not modified to accept a fixed cartridge such as a bullet or shell and as long as they are not easily modified to accept the same such as the modern muzzle loading rifles that can have the barrel or breach exchanged with one that would fire a modern cartridge. There is a stipulation that they can fire fixed cartridges as long as they are no longer available in the U.S. through normal 'channels' (e.g. obsolete sized cartridges, or foreign calibers)
