It was an illegal, unprovoked attack backed by the US in an attempt to overthrow Castro. It failed largely due to the attackers having no actual plan or objective, and the fact the Cubans did not in any way support the attack. The Americans and rich Cuban exiles were counting on the people to go "hey! People who want to help us go back to an over 40% illiteracy rate and the nickname 'the bordello of the US'! Let's join them!". Surprisingly enough, that did not happen, and the Cubans beat them back.
