It was an illegal, unprovoked attack backed by the US in an attempt to overthrow Castro. It failed largely due to the attackers having no actual plan or objective, and the fact the Cubans did not in any way support the attack. The Americans and rich Cuban exiles were counting on the people to go "hey! People who want to help us go back to an over 40% illiteracy rate and the nickname 'the bordello of the US'! Let's join them!". Surprisingly enough, that did not happen, and the Cubans beat them back.

The exiles trained with the CIA and were promised American air support, which they were never given. The exiles landed in Cuba at the Bay of Pigs in April of 1961. Without the American support they were promised, the exiles were quickly defeated by Castro's forces.

The reason why the Bay of Pigs Invasion happened was because of the CIA's desire to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro. The CIA trained Cuban refugees for this purpose.
So far as I know, Kennedy is the only one who made any real effort to overthrow Castro when he endorsed the ill-fated Baty of Pigs invasion.
