They were evil enough that God would flood the earth to get rid of them.

Another answer:

"There were GIANTS[Nephilim - inspired word; Literal Bible {LIT}] in the earth in those days... the same became MIGHTY MEN[heroes - LIT] which were of old, MEN OF RENOWN[reputation - LIT]" (Gen.6:4 KJV).

This statement is actually not as "strange and ominous" as some men make it out to be, anymore than it is today, considering what "Nephilim" really means. Because Nephilim are a dime-a-dozen today!

The world WORSHIPS the giants [Nephilim] of today... HEROES... people of public renown and reputation. It worships music and movies IDOLS... and a thousand other "heroes" in career categories and strata of society that others try to emulate.

Nephilim or "nphiyl" (nef-eel') Literal Bible [LIT], simply means: "...a BULLY or TYRANT..." (Strong's Definitions).

Were they evil above and beyond anyone else in the world... then or now? Well, ask yourself this: "How does God see ALL of mankind - then and now? "

"And God saw that the wickedness of MAN [not just the Nephilim] was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was ONLY EVIL CONTINUALLY." (verse 5)

This Genesis passage is the introduction to the account of Noah and the flood.

According to The Bible... has man's nature changed any since the flood? Or does Jesus tell us:

"When the Son of Man returns, IT WILL BE LIKE IT WAS IN NOAH's DAY ." (Matt.24:37 NLTNew Living Translation)

The "Nephilim" of Noah's day weren't "rogue, sex-starved angels producing super-human babies through human women" as some overly-imaginative men interpret this passage. The earth was new, then... and mankind was new. They were new to the ways of sin; disobedience to their Creator's laws [see I John 3:4 for God's definition of sin].

In those days, other than the Serpent in the Garden... the first generations of mankind hadn't "chosen other gods to worship" [which, although men don't think it's such a big deal today] -- IT'S DEADLY SERIOUS BUSINESS TO GOD, being His First Commandment.

So, the Nephilim of Noah's day would have been the "very first humans; heroes, bullies, tyrants, and men of renown: that mankind would have FIRST BEGUN TO WORSHIP "... thus, expanding upon the range of their sins.

Sin... disobeying God... has never been a big deal to man. So man has always had no trouble findind or creating some THING or some ONE to worship -- some one or thing that distracts him or comes between him and his Creator and his Creator's First Law: "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."

The Nephilim WERE THE FIRST MEN WORSHIPED BY OTHER MEN ON THE EARTH! They were the world's first LEADERS! Mankind's first taste of "man's government."

Most people don't give it much thought... but God holds the "leaders" [governments] of men responsible for exacerbating the woes [sins] of the people. The "leaders" of men are the tyrants, bullies and dictators [NEPHILIM] of this world. They are the "oppressors" of mankind -- all striving under the ministering hand and leadership of "that old Serpent" [Satan the Devil - see Rev.12:9], the god of this world that the first parents chose for their children to worship in the beginning.

"LISTEN TO THE LORD, you LEADERS of Israel! LISTEN TO THE LAW OF OUR GOD, people of Israel. You act just like the RULERS and people of Sodom and Gomorrah. I am sick of your sacrifices, says the LORD... I hate all your festivals and sacrifices. I cannot stand the sight of them!" (Isa.1:10-14 NLT)

Men like to be worshiped and admired by others. It goes hand-in-hand with man's selfish nature. The world has been "feeding" on this vain selfishness from the beginning. It doesn't care about others... it's "every man for himself"... it's Darwinism: "survival of the fittest" in this world. Instead of "caring about one another," being genuinely concerned for one another. We want praise, acknowledgement and approval heaped upon ourselves.

That's what the "Nephilim" were... and ARE, today. They were the "idols" and "gods" of their day. And they are the idols and gods of today.

It's a deadly and destructive game man plays. It's the reason for the suffering, misery, wars and death in the world that leads to the destruction of all life on earth. Mankind was rapidly headed there in Noah's day. A situation that God arrested by "starting over with SEVEN PEOPLE" on the other side of the flood.

And God had to slow down the rapid approach of the destruction of the earth again on the other side of the flood by "confounding the languages," thus creating a communications barrier until the future time [like NOW] when mankind would overcome it, and once again obtain free-flowing information and knowledge.

Like the watery-flood of Noah's day... Peter tells us that the LORD Jesus Christ is going to be the SECOND flood to hit the earth -- a flood of FIRE:

"Then He used the water to destroy the world with a mighty flood. And God has also Commanded that the heavens and the earth will be consumed BY FIRE on the Day of Judgment, when ungodly people will perish." (II Peter 3:6-7 NLT)

"For our God is a consuming fire." (Heb.12:29 NLT)

The "Nephilim" weren't of themselves more "evil" than any other person in the world. But they became the first men to be worshiped by other men [not good in the eyes of God].

And it's selfish men at the helm of government over other men, that lead the people further astray from the ways of God, that increases the misery, oppression and suffering in the world.

And it's this deadly situation that existed in Noah's day... and that is repeating itself and becoming increasingly deadly in these last days, that Jesus tells us will soon require His return to the earth:

"For that will be a time of greater horror than anything the world has ever seen or will ever see again. In fact, unless that time of calamity is shortened, the ENTIRE HUMAN RACE WILL BE DESTROYED. But it will be shortened for the sake of God's chosen ones." (Matt.24:21-22 NLT)

The errant leadership of the "Nephilim" of Noah's day would have brought about the destruction of the human race long ago if God hadn't stopped it... and "saved a tiny remnant" to replant on the earth.

And the "Nephilim" [the bullies, tyrants, dictators, presidents, premieres and religious leaders] of these last days before Jesus' return... along with man's "increase in knowledge" through the internet, the removal of the language barrier, and the daily leaps and bounds of man's technological advances over which he seems to possess less and less control with the passage of time; are leading the world into the latter day time of which Jesus speaks -- the repeat of history. The WORLD's RETURN TO THE CONDITIONS OF NOAH's DAY.

"People didn't realize [or 'believe'] what was going to happen until the Flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes." (Matt.24:39 NLT)

In the "next flood"... Jesus will be both the "fiery flood" that removes the wicked from the earth... and will also be the "Ark" that will save the remnant of mankind -- the ones who survive the errant leadership of the "Nephilim."

God's message to mankind has never changed. It's the foundation of His laws that man's leaders [the Nephilim], and subsequently the people, have always ignored in favor of serving themselves.

"...Let Me no longer see your evil deeds. Give up your wicked ways. LEARN TO DO GOOD. Seek Justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the orphan. Fight for the rights of widows... No matter how deep the stain of your sins, I CAN REMOVE IT... If only you will Obey Me and let Me help you..." (Isa.1:16-19 NLT).

God condemns "false teachers" [leaders] within His church who should know His Truth... and know better than to lie to His people for personal gain.

"Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach[lead] will be Judged by God with greater strictness. We all make many mistakes, but those who control their tongues can also control themselves in every other way." (James 3:1-2 NLT)

The "Nephilim" were and ARE the "leaders" [religious, political, celebrities; heroes and idols] of mankind throughout the generations of men that are even now leading this world to its destruction. While God sees that the imaginations of "all men" everywhere are continually upon EVIL -- it is the "Nephilim," the government leaders, whom God holds responsible among men to lead their people in the ways of God, that perhaps renders them MORE EVIL than others in God's eyes. They are at least certain to be Judged more strictly at the Last Day.
