Territorially, Virginia was the largest of the colonies that became the United States. Its charter included lands west of Pennsylvania and north of present-day Kentucky's southern border to the Mississippi River. It included much or all of present-day Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and eastern Minnesota. (Parts of those lands were also claimed by Connecticut and Massachusetts.) Virginia ceded its Northeast Territory to the new federal government; that cession included all lands north of the Ohio River.
