The South was also attempting to build its navy, for example the Monitor-Merrimack duel, involved the Monitor, an ironclad warship from the North and the CSS Virginia ( formerly the USS merrimack). The two ships were the vanguarrd of both navies. So in short the Northern blockade was complex because of the geography of the southern coast and experienced varrying levels of success.
