The Sound of Music is based on a true story. In real life, Maria, who really was a nun, was sent to Captain von Trapp to take care of his sickly daughter. Eventually, they fell in love and got married. World War 2 forced them to leave Austria and at that time, Maria was pregnant with a son. And then she wrote a book called "The Story of the von Trapp Singers," which was made into "The Sound of Music." The names of the children were not the real actual names and some of the characters weren't real, either.

To a certain extent yes. There was a Captain Georg Von Trapp who was a widower with 7 children who had a nun come to be a governess and married her, later leaving Austria when the Nazi's invaded.

However there are some inconsistancies with the real story and the movie story

In real life Maria came to the Von Trapp house in the 1920's and by the time of the German invasion she had two duaghters and was pregnant with her third child.

The oldest child of Georg Von Trapp was a man who became a doctor, not a 16 year old girl named Leisel

The family did not run away by going into the mountains-they said they were going on a ski vacation in Italy and took a ship to America.
