If you mean the American Civil War of 1861, I believe it could have been averted if California had been two states - Northern California (free soil) and Southern California (slave).
If those two states had been admitted to the Union along the lines of the Missouri Compromise, then that successful Compromise could have lasted until slavery died out, as it soon would have done, as more countries refused to trade with a slave-owning nation.
