There was a Saint Nicholas of Myra who was the bishop of Myra in Asia Minor, today known as modern Turkey. Nicholas spent a number of years in prison under the persecutions of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. He was very generous but kept his generosity a secret, anonymously leaving gifts of money for the poor late at night . He had a great love for children and is reported to have brought three young boys back to life who had been murdered and hidden in a barrel of salt brine. The feast day of Nicholas is December 6 and is observed in many countries by giving gifts to children. He has been hijacked and turned into Santa Claus and is now used as a non-Christian commercial figure in an effort to remove Christ from Christmas - the real reason for the season.
