Religion was a minor component of Henry VIII's break from the Catholic Church. Henry VIII wanted to annul his marriage to Catherine the Great on the basis that she was married to his brother first. The Pope refused because Catherine the Great was the Aunt of Habsburg Emperor (the main source of funding for the Vatican). Though Henry was a devout Catholic he was enraged at the Popes refusal and broke away from the Catholic Church and began the Church of England so that he could divorce Catherine.
