The Day of Infamy.
Pearl Harbor is labeled as "The day that will live in infamy." -Roosevelt
They achieved their short term objective Given the final outcome, they probably wish they had not done it.
The first serious plans and preparations for the actual attack began in January 1941. A hypothetical attack on the Pearl Harbor base had been on the exams given at the Japanese Naval Academy for years though. Both Japanese and Americans thought an attack on Pearl Harbor was not feasible because the torpedoes dropped from bomber ran too deep after dropping and would get stuck in the bottom of the harbor, a problem which Japan solved by practicing extreme low-level drops and fitting the torpedoes with wooden fins for extra buoyancy.
On December 7, 1941 local time at Pearl Harbor which is east of the international date line (Hawaii, North & South America, Europe & Africa), and December 8, 1941 west of this line (Japan, China, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, etc.).

"The natural sheltered bay at the southern end of Oahu,Hawaii made an excellent naval harbor. In May 1940, President Roosevelt moved the main base of the U.S. fleet from southern California to Pearl Harbor. 'Battleship Row' was the name given to the line of battle ships." This information was taken "Attack On Pearl Harbor" by Shelley Tanaka.
In the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces on December 7th 1941 destroyed 188 planes. No data can be found as to how many planes have been destroyed in the entire history of aviation in that given location, though I doubt it's much more.
The date that Roosevelt gave the speech was December 18, 1941. The time he gave his speech I do not know. Sorry. : )You can listen to his speech on this web site www.americanrhetoric.com/top100speechesall.html.
Japan surrendered to USA because USA dropped an atomic bomb which destroyed Hiroshima in World War II. USA dropped the bomb because the Japanese dropped a bomb first in their army bay so they could not attack by sea.
Because we had absolutely no reason to expect it. Michael Montagne You might want to read up a little on the history or Pearl Harbor. There was every reason to expect an attack was coming. The night before when "magic" intercepted a 14 point message to their diplomat Roosevelt declared "this means war". He predicted we would be at war before the next monday. Also before this, magic had intercepted and decoded many messages hinting at an attack at pear harbor. Look up the "bomb plot" information where spies were asked to divide the harbor into sections, label all ships when they were in port, when they berthed next to one another etc. There are many, many examples of hints of war. All you have to do is look it up.
The only people who knew for certain that Pearl Harbor would be attacked were in the Japanese military. On the other hand, war between Japan and the US was widely anticipated at least as far back as 1925, given American opposition to Japanese expansionism I suspect that most people anticipating a Japanese attack, however, would have expected it in the Philippines or somewhere else closer to Japan.
Japanese airplanes flown from the decks of Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carriers attacked and destroyed battleships of the United States Navy, at Pearl Harbor, United States Territory. An obvious act of war. Correction, Pearl Harbour wasn't part of the US until the 60s and it was the US that caused Pearl Harbour by cutting off Japans oil supply and refusing to come to an arrangement with Japan so Japan was given no choice but to bomb Pearl Harbour.
