There were quite a number of them and there will be others someday in the future. That won't stop aviation from being the safest way to travel. Most of the aircraft that are referred to as ditching at sea or lost at sea in or near the Hawaiian Islands were:

a) Pre WW2 training flights.

b) WW2 Japanese and American Combat losses during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

c) WW2 American Military Training flights.

d) Post WW2 American Military Training flights.

e) Private aircraft.

f) Early TransPacific Commercial flights and finally,

g) Modern Commercial InterIsland flights and then TransPacific flights.

If you are considering a Lower 48 to Hawaii flight you should have an extremely high expectation of completing it without incident.
