California cavalry under GEN Pico, fought US Army GEN Stephen Watts Kearny at the Battle of San Pasqual near San Diego in 1846. At the time of the battle, Pico's cavalry were called the "Californio Lancers", and were mounted on swift horses; Kearny's men were US Dragoons mounted on army mules. Twenty two US Dragoons died in the battle. Californian casualties are believed to have been only wounded. Dragoons were mounted infantrymen; today's equal to mechanized infantrymen. Official US Army documents credit San Pasqual as a US Army victory, because Pico left the field. The old style of establishing victory. Under the "limited war" system, such as the Vietnam War, in which "body count" determined who won, Pico would have been considered the victor, as his men eliminated 22 US personnel, with possible 0 loss to themselves.
