Not as we know it, but Benjamine Franklin, in a famous 1752 experiment, he flew a kite with a key attached to prove that electricity exists in the atmosphere. Electricity existed chemically (batteries), and by static electricity. At that time they did not know how to produce electricity with magnets (generator).
