The 1st recorded sandpaper was in 13th Century China using sand or crushed up shells on a parchment glued on with natural gum.
Dutch Rush, or Horsehair and Scouring Rush, (a plant) grows in many parts of the world and was & is still used for extremely fine sanding. Not only can it be used to smooth/sand wood, but it also coats and seals the wood and is a good preliminary for varnish. It was used widely for sanding Musical Instruments.
Sharkskin has been used for centuries along with another fish skin thought to be extinct but isn't and is refered to as a "living fossel"; the Coelacanth. Sandpaper also used to be made with crushed glass as far back as the 17th century, perhaps even earlier. Wet-Dry sandpaper was invented by 3M in the 1920's
