Besides using toothpicks, the Romans chewed twigs. This practice was used around the world until the invention of the toothbrush and is still used in parts of the world were toothbrushes are not available. Animal bones, bird feathers, and porcupine quills have been used as toothpicks around the world.

Five toothpicks found in as hoard in England which date to the 5th century. They have a comma-shaped part on top of a handle and are made of iron. The two most elaborate ones have the shape of an ibis bird, with the bird's beak being the toothpick. They are decorated with gilding. The other three also have a scoop at the other end (which could have been used for cleaning the ears) and a socket which might have contained a hairbrush.

The toothbrush seems to have appeared in Europe in the 17th century. In China a toothbrush with hog bristles sourced from Siberia and northern China which dated to the Tang Dynasty (619-907) has been discovered. The use of toothbrushes made of horse-tail hairs attached to an ox-bone handle in China was recorded in 1233 by a Japanese Zen master.

Ancient Egyptians brushed their teeth with rocks. Might sound painful but it really wasn't. They also, as time went on by, used hard v-shapped bark (sticks) with string connecting from one end to the other to get in back of the mouth to reach the molars. Other things, such as plants and animal bones (usually fish), where used also. It's funny how i seen your question and today I have a research paper on the health, medical, and sanitation practices of the ancient Egyptians due today, so I've been doing online research all morining. -Ebony age 16
