Most often, when a limb needed to be amputated, Chloroform or Laudanum was administered. Laudanum is also known as Tincture of Opium -- an alcoholic herbal preparation containing approximately 10% powdered opium. Whiskey would've been reserved for other types of less sever pain or administered when Chloroform or Laudanum were not available.
