not usually, although anything can happen with cars. Usually it's the other way around, with a water pump failure causing a head gasket to blow, because of the tight tolerances of the head and block water passages, and the higher temperatures that the newer cars run at.

The way this was explained to me was that the older cars had more metal in the heads and blocks, more metal between the passages for the water cooling and oil lubrication. They ran the cars at a lower temperature also, which meant that heat had an easier time being dissapated. These days, there is less metal and they are run at higher temps, which leads to more chances of a failure like a blown head gasket if a water pump goes south. The cars are run at a higher temp because of more stringent pollution requirements.

Good luck with your repair. Sometimes the water pumps are integral to the timing of the valves, so be aware of this. If you have the timing belt going around the water pump, this is the case.

Hey man, hope I'm not too late to help, as a rule, no a blown head gasket should not cause your pump to fail. I suppose theoretically a person could argue that if an engine gets hot enough to blow a head gasket it could cook the seals in the pump, but it would be the exception. More than likely it was the pump went first causing the engine to overheat. Good luck. Mannsvillain

How does blown head gasket happen?

The most common cause of a blown head gasket is an over heating engine. Low coolant or coolant not circulating through the engine causes the engine to heat up and the gasket to fail.

Can you drive a car very long with a blow head gasket?

No. Driving the car with a blown head gasket will cause the motor to fail completely. Get the car towed to a mechanic as soon as possible.

If a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse has a blown head gasket what other damage could that have done to the engine?

If you have coolant in the oil, it will cause the rod and main bearings to fail.

What else could cause head gasket to fail in 1996 Saturn SL2 other than history of low coolant?

overheating is #1 answer for blown head gaskets!

What happens when antifreeze is poured into your oil?

When antifreeze is poured into your oil, it weakens your oil cause it to break down prematurely and can cause your engine to fail by spinning an engine bearing and even smoke. This is also a sign of a blown head gasket.

Can a head gasket be blown on an mgf It has not overheated and temperature is still normal but the oil is getting in to the water tank?

in a word yes when you turn the engine off theoil pressure drops quickly but the water pressure drops slowly so water will get into the sump then your crankshaft journals fail

What can cause a head gasket to blow will not having the oil cap on or antifreeze in the radiator cause it?

Lots of things can cause a head gasket to fail, but the usual cause is engine overheating. Things like warped or cracked heads, incorrectly installed gaskets or heads, incorrectly torqued head bolts, torquing head bolts in the wrong sequence, are also common culprits. Not having the oil filler cap installed, while not a good idea, shouldn't result in head gasket failure. No antifreeze in the radiator (either just water filled or empty, not sure which your question meant), or not having the radiator cap installed, could definitely cause engine overheating, and therefore, a blown head gasket.

Is blown head gasket MOT fail?

As I have no idea what you mean by "MOT fail" and I cannot answer except to say that a blown head asset is very serious and you should stop driving this vehicle immediately. It is a major repair but easily repaired with new gaskets unless you continued to drive the car and ruin the engine.

Can a blown head gasket make engine oil leak out?

No, head gasket work with the cooling, however it has been known to mix with the oil and make it milky, i guesss if to much mixed in the oil section then yes cause oil seal, valve cover gasket, all could fail at that point and leak but the oil you see should be white'sh brown. here are the signs of a blown head gasket back up of cooling in overflow, milky oil on dip stick, and the number one pick of signs is wet spot on block right around the head.

What would cause the blinkers to fail on a 1994 Oldsmobile cutlass ciera?

cracked or broken wiring, blown fuse

Why are head gaskets blown?

AnswerNormally you blow a head gasket, when the engine overheats. They can also blow from incorrect installation or poor design.Head gaskets expand and contract according to engine temperature, these cycles may, after a long period of time, cause the gasket to fail. If you're replacing the gasket, check the engine block, and head for warping. Follow proper cleaning and torque specifications during assembly.

Should a mechanic be able to tell that a cylinder head gasket is about to blow especially when they have been told that the engine is running hot?

No. He can tell you if it is blown but not if it is about to blow. Clay is 100% right. Remember that overheating can be caused by other problems or not performing routine maintainance-- which in turn may cause the head gasket to fail AND all steps should be taken to inspect/repair the coolant system. The head gasket failing or head warpage may be the result of the cooling system not working properly.
