There are a lot of different antibiotics and the dosing schedule is different for all of them. It is based on how quickly the drug builds up in your blood enough to be effective and how quickly your body gets rid of the antibiotic, as well as how strong/hardy the type of infection is. There are some antibiotics that you only take for 3 days and others you can take for 2 weeks or more for very difficult infections. If you can't remember what the doctor told you, you can call the pharmacy or a pharmacist at a local hospital or clinic. They can help you to figure out how long to take it based on the drug name and the doctor's instructions. One of the big problems we have around the world is that we are developing super-bugs, or antibiotic resistant organisms. The biggest reason this is happening is because people take medicine until they feel a little better and then quit, allowing the weakened, but not dead, bugs to come back stronger than ever, but now they've learned how to survive the antibiotics - so good question, and important to take your medicine as prescribed for the best results - for everyone!

No. Antibiotics always have to be taken the full dose, all the days they have been prescribed. If you stop it either wont work or you risk getting immune to them. This is the rule of all antibiotics. And I know why you want to quit after 3 days; they take 3 days to make you feel better. But that does not mean the infection is treated. All antibiotics makes you feel better after 3-4 days but the treatment is not over until around 10-14 days for most antibiotics.
An abscess will only fully heal when it has been treated with root canal therapy, is drained by a professional or the tooth is extracted. Most dentist will prescribe antibiotics and pain killers to take for 5-7 days. After the 4th day of taking antibiotics you should be able to feel some relief or the abscess might pop and begin to drain. Even if it does pop or the pain goes away it doesnt mean the abscess is gone, you still need dental therapy for it.
The oral surgeon or dentist will let you know if antibiotics are required.
