However, Scotland now has its own government again and Scottish people would probably say that Scotland is a different nation from England although they're not recognised as such at the United Nations. The current status of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is similar to individual States within the United States. The full name of the country is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' and the citizens of those regions are British in international law.
