Villas were holiday houses of the urban rich, farmsteads of large estates, or imprerial residences. Villlas were located outside of the city and most of them were self-supporting, luxurious pieces of property. The "normal" city house of the Romans was called a domus.

Of course they did. A villa was an elaborate country house, many times with farm land surrounding it. It needed a large staff not only to run the commercial aspects but to manage and care for the house as well. All these people lived at the villa, even when the maser/owner was not present.
