I was stationed on 2 separate submarines during the Vietnam conflict. One was a old diesel sub and the other an attack nuclear sub. The diesel boat was operating close to ports in the south china sea and ran into a sub net that was stretched across an opening to one particular bay or port (when on subs, you are not told your location). Anyway, we heard the ripping and scratching along the sides and in the propeller. At the same time, we heard the commander in the control room screaming "Romeo, Romeo !. Romeo is an old Russian diesel submarine. They chased us back out to sea as fast as we could do. Along the way I am not sure if we were fired on, but it was a hairy ordeal and our main hydraulics got broken which put our boat on a death dive toward the bottom of the ocean. Next thing I knew, a sailor climbed up the wall of the sub to the station for "blowing" the rear ballast tanks with air. We slowly came to a stop and started back up backwards. We came out of the water in reverse and fell back down to the surface. Divers went out and cleared the steel netting and we went on our way. So, to answer your question, If subs were not actually hit by torpedoes, I am positive they enemy (Russians, vc, or whoever), tried hard to destroy our subs.
No, it wasn't because nobody won any land.
No, of course. Vietnamese's cause is just.
The nation (country) of Vietnam didn't exist during the Vietnam War. Nor was any nation called "Vietnam" fighting the US. There was a country called North Vietnam that defeated the Republic of South Vietnam in 1975. The US was allied to the RVN (Republic of South Vietnam).
Diem was reportedly extremely anti-communist, and any national (citizen) showing communist trends was stomped out quickly.
If you mean Jimmy Carter, he was an Officer in the US Navy serving in surface ships and on diesel-electric submarines during the Cold War.
US Subs patrolled the world's oceans, including the Vietnam coastline. Other than possibly any covert operations, US submarines just patrolled, and kept an eye on any Soviet subs working in the South China Sea (Vietnamese Coastline).
Those who served in the Merchant Marines in WW2 should be regarded as warriors because of the courage shown while in waters infested with enemy submarines alongside the dangers of being torpedoed and , yes , there are memorials to these brave sailors - see related link below .
They funded the war.
Certainly. A war is determined explicitly by the presence of conflict. If there was not conflict in Vietnam, there would not have been a war.
There were not any troops in Vietnam during the Kennedy administration. Just 500 military advisors. Kennedy was assassinated before we sent troops

The goal of the Vietnam War was to stop the spread of communism. As such, the US felt the need to stop the influence of communist North Vietnam, which entailed supporting South Vietnam in any way possible.
They did not in any way.
About 435. Any consensus?

No! You had to be "In country" or fly over on a mission or in the direct waters off the coast.
