The Virginia settlers chose a small island on the edge of the river as the site for their town, which they named Jamestown, after King James I of England. The settlers believed the island would be good protection from Indian attacks. This proved to be not true.
In addition, the island was low and swampy. Malarial fevers plagued the colony, and the wells used for drinking water easily became polluted.
