According to the Transcendental Meditation web site, the organization is a non-profit, educational organization and all fees paid for meditation instruction are used for educational and charitable purposes. They say the organization has no owners or shareholders and that there are no individuals who profit from the organization's income. They state that employees and administrators receive modest salaries and that the non-profit receives an independent financial audit on an annual basis in order to comply with government regulations for their non-profit status.

He toured the world several times and then in the 1960s began to train teachers. He created a worldwide movement with centers in more than 100 countries before dying in 2008 of natural causes.

Why do you have pay for instruction in Transcendental Meditation if it is effortless?

There are many things in life that are easy, effortless and natural. These would include walking, speaking, sleeping, running etc. Yet all of us need training and coaching in these areas. Parents teach their children to walk, speak etc. Those with sleeping difficulties get therapy. Those that want to excel in running get lessons and coaching. In an enlightened society meditation is also taught by parent to their children. However, in today's material world few parents are not experts in Transcendental Meditation and cannot teach it to their children. This is true even in India where Transcendental Meditation has its roots. So we must enroll in a course and get proper training from a certified Transcendental Meditation teacher. Because these teachers teach meditation as an occupation they must be compensated so they can buy food and pay rent just like any other professional who has invested thousands of dollars in extensive training and certifications programs.

What is trancendental meditation?

There are many different kinds of meditation. Transcendental meditation is just one type. It is derived from the Vedic tradition of India was revitalized by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950's. It is an effortless form of meditation that does not involve concentration or contemplation. It utilizes a mantra ( a personalized but meaningless sound) and is practiced twice a day for 20 minutes. It does not involve any belief or lifestyle changes. A lot of famous people have publically stated that they practice TM. For example; the Beatles, Howard Stern, Clint Eastwood, Jerry Seinfield etc. With proper personal instruction a person can experience a state in which the repetition of the mantra no longer consciuosly occurs and instead the mind is quiet and expereinces the infinite field of energy and intelligence; where all thought originate. The Transcendental Meditation technique a simple, natural, enjoyable procedure to settle the mind, expand awareness and access the limitless reservoir of creativity, energy and intelligence that resides within everyone-for more powerful thinking, heightened well-being and greater efficiency in life. The Transcendental Meditation technique is unlike any other form of meditation, relaxation or self-development, and is distinguished by its effortlessness, naturalness and profound effectiveness. It is the only meditation practice with extensive scientific research verifying benefits for all areas of life. The TM technique is practiced twice daily for 15-20 minutes while sitting quietly and comfortably with eyes closed. It requires no effort or concentration and no special skills or change of lifestyle. During the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, mind and body spontaneously settle into a unique state of restful alertness-the body becomes deeply relaxed as the mind awakens to it's inner potential. Scientific research studies on the TM technique show that twice-daily experience of this restful alertness alleviates stress and revitalizes mind and body, creating a higher state of health and stimulating the natural growth of creativity, intelligence, inner-happiness and self-sufficiency. The beneficial effects of the Transcendental Meditation program have been verified by over 600 scientific research studies conducted at over 250 independent universities and research institutions worldwide-such as Yale Medical School, Harvard Medical School, Stanford and UCLA-and published in over 350 peer-reviewed scientific journals. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. government agency that oversees medical research, has granted over $24 million for scientists to study the effects of the Transcendental Meditation program for prevention and treatment of heart disease, hypertension and stroke. After nearly 40 years of scientific investigation of the Transcendental Meditation program, all the major findings about the program's benefits have been replicated by independent research. These scientific research studies on the Transcendental Meditation technique have shown that daily practice leads to a wide range of personal benefits-higher IQ, faster reaction time, improved problem solving abilities, decreased anxiety, improved self-esteem, normalized blood pressure, reduced illness and longer lifespan-while creating a more harmonious environment. Some people suggest the Transcendental Meditation organization might be a cult. In my opinion these are baseless claims. Transcendental Meditation is a scientific technique that is practiced by all types of people from all social backgrounds and religions. I have practiced Transcendental Meditation since I was 10 years old - I am now 23 and I never saw any sign of the organization being a cult. TM is great tool for me to be successful in everything I do.I have been practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique for 37 years, and have participated in many of the advanced programs, including TM Teacher Training. I consider the organization that teaches the TM technique to be not only benign but noble and professional, dedicated to the one purpose of making the benefits of meditation available to people everywhere.

Why does transcendental meditation have to be taught by a teacher?

When a person learns the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique they are instructed by a certified TM teacher and they get lots of personal, one on one, attention. This is really valuable because everyone is different and learns at their own pace. An experienced TM teacher can guide you through every step and assure that you learn the technique correctly and gain all of the benefit. Many people wonder: why can't I learn Transcendental Meditation from a book or a CD? Well imagine trying to learn a golf swing from just a verbal description in a book or on a recording. It just doesn't work. In fact you could develop bad habits that would hurt your golf game and be difficult to correct later. But a one on one session with a golf pro, well now you're learning! A teacher gives you feedback at each step so you can correct yourself and maximize the learning process. At the same time getting feedback when you practice correctly also helps you to grow in confidence and then meditate successfully on your own at home. The TM technique is unique among the many forms of meditation available today. It's natural, effortless and anyone can learn. It does not involve any kind of concentration, lifestyle or belief. But it is a delicate process so learning from a TM teacher is crucial. It's a lot easier than playing the guitar or perfecting your golf swing, but at the same time requires that same kind of personalized guidance.Transcendental Meditation (www.tm.org) differs from other meditation methods in that it teaches the mind to move beyond thinking to the source of thought, pure consciousness. To learn the Transcendental Mediation technique, I suggest you contact your local TM center (or call 888-LEARN-TM) and speak to a certified meditation instructor. Learn about the seven-step, 10-12 hours of training you get during the TM course and the careful personalized instruction you receive. Learn about the one-on-one follow-up-a lifetime of personal guidance, as needed-and the optional, ongoing advanced classes and group meditations at TM centers. Maharishi created a wealth of knowledge and clarification to ensure that your understanding can grow as your experience deepens. All of this follow-up is available to you for the rest of your life when you learn the TM technique-at no further charge after you've completed the initial seven-step course. And learn about the gift of scholarships and grants for people in financial need, to help pay for such comprehensive training. There is significant financial help available so that everyone who wants to can learn The Transcendental Meditation Technique.Maharishi, the founder of the TM program, spent over 50 years elucidating the principles behind the Transcendental Meditation technique, always emphasizing the need for personal, one-on-one instruction:"By necessity, the practice of Transcendental Meditation is imparted by personal instruction. It cannot be done through a book [or CD or online training] because it not only involves telling an aspirant how to experience the subtle states of thinking, but an even greater responsibility lies in finding out what the aspirant experiences when he proceeds on that path… The experiences on the path of Transcendental Meditation are very subtle… It takes a while for the beginner to be able to pinpoint his experiences of the subtle state of thought. The practice of Transcendental Meditation must always be given by the expert teachers of Transcendental Meditation who have been properly trained to give it and who have been trained to check the experiences."The checking of experiences is a vital point in the practice of Transcendental Meditation. Again, it cannot be done through books…by nature it is delicate and therefore highly technical. But under personal instruction and guidance the way is smooth and easy." [Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, The Science of Being and Art of Living (New York: Plume/Penguine Group, 1963/2001), p. 35-36]It is important to note that there are alternatives to Transcendental Meditation for those who cannot afford it or believe it is religious. An example is NSR Meditation (www.nsrusa.org), which is different from TM and can indeed be learned successfully by anyone from a manual. TM and NSR are taught by two different but nonprofit organizations.

How much money does meditation therapist make?

In the first place, I would not put the words "meditation" and "therapist" together. A therapist is a person trained in psychology, and s/he works with the mind. A meditator works with that which resides beyond the mind: the awareness. It is possible to find meditation classes for free or five or ten dollars per hour. In this case, the leader of the class will not make much money at all.

What meditation promotes?

Meditation is such a broad church of activity that it would be hard to suggest a catch all objective. It is probably also really important to separate meditation for health and meditation that leads towards a spiritual goal. Meditation for health can be further broken down to physical and mental health. Generally speaking most meditation used to promote improved mental health in the West uses different forms of; calm abiding, mindfulness or transcendental techniques. My experience is based on the mindfulness methods where the idea is to 'let go' of all thought processes for a short while. Over time this may promote a sense of calm, increase the activity of the left hemisphere of the brain and lead to the feeling that one is a little more in control of what is happening. In every case always seek guidance from a reliable/experienced teacher.

Do monks lead the meditation?

Buddhist monks practices are a way of showing devotion to the Buddha through ceremonies, festivals, different types of meditation and retreats. Buddhist practices include rituals - a visual way for Buddhists to demonstrate their beliefs. Meditation is essential in Buddhism. Therefore, in order to achieve enlightenment, Buddhists must know how to meditate properly. There are two main kinds of meditation: Samatha meditation - This is known as calming meditation and Buddhists believe that it leads to deeper concentration. It is important as it allows Buddhists to let go of cravings and therefore achieve nibbana. It focuses on mindfulness of breathing. Vipassana meditation - This is known as insight meditation. When a Buddhist meditates, they believe that they can see things as they really are. This allows them to gain realisation and understand the impermanence of things and the nature of reality. It is not just about focusing on breathing - it is also about focusing on exploration. It can even be done when walking. For more check out cutt. ly/bxbbGQs (remove the space)
