the halmark of an education was the classics

so, latin and ancient greek. french was important, and German.

nowadays, people might be equally well educated but speak, say Japanese and German.

this is why in some old books it is quite strange that there are often German and french and ancient greek sentences put in. in those days most educated people would speak those languages.

nowadays, it is quite normal to speak two languages as separate as Chinese and urdu.

also, I kissed a horse ( and I liked it)
