1st Answer:

Yes there was. Slaves have been all through history and were called "serfs" in the middle ages. When the barbarians raided villages and areas they took slaves whom they sold to pirates and others. These people filled the need for labor on the manors since they had no say in how they could conduct their life. Once a slave always a slave.

2nd Answer:

We have to be careful to distinguish between slaves and serfs. They were not the same thing. Serfs were free, except that they were not allowed to move away from their manor without agreement from the lord. They were not possessions, but people who had an hereditary right to work and live on the manor and to be protected by the lord, to who they paid rent.

Slaves were a different group. They were, indeed, people who had been taken as captives, and parties of raiders went out from some groups of people to take them and sell them in markets. They existed all over Europe in the Early Middle Ages, as they had in ancient times.

With the passing of time, however, slavery was abolished in many Western countries. The Church had always acted to liberate slaves, and gradually the work paid off. In England, one of the earliest acts of William the Conqueror was to abolish chattel slavery of Christians in England in 1066. King Henry I abolished the slave trade altogether in 1102. It was similarly gradually given up by many other groups of Northern and Western Europe over time.

But the slave trade continued in Europe, especially Southern and Eastern Europe, where it continued throughout the time. Medieval slave routes ran across the Mediterranean Sea and steppes of Russia, and extended as far as China.

The slaves were tied to the land. They could not leave the land to which they were tied. They had to work for the lord about 3 days a week. The rest of the time they worked the land for their benefit. They did have to pay the lord fees for use of the land normally in produce. They had to use the lord's mill to grind their grain. They could not use any other and they had to pay for the privilege.

Worked on the manor, estates farming/caring for animals.

Answer:

Serfs worked on manors. Sometimes slaves did as well. But the two should not be confused. Serfs were mostly free, aside from the fact that they were not allowed to move off their manors. Slaves mostly did work anyone with any freedom would want to escape from. King William I enacted an important law against slavery in England as one of his first acts in 1066, and though it probably was not entirely effective, Henry I prohibited the slave trade altogether in 1102. Serfdom, however, continued unabated.

Slaves were mostly taken as prisoners in wars or slave raids. Most of them were transported to markets in port cities of Southern Europe, the Byzantine Empire, the East, or Muslim lands, where they were sold, and they were used in any way their owners saw fit. They were used like work animals, and they were used for sexual gratification. They had few rights, or none, in the countries where slavery was allowed.

Some groups, such as the Irish and the Vikings, did not usually raid for slaves for sale in the large markets, but used them or sold them in their own countries, where they were used as workers or as servants.

Slavery in early medieval Europe was relatively common. Slavery declined in the Middle Ages in most parts of Europe as serfdom slowly rose, but it never completely disappeared. It persisted longer in Southern and Easter Europe. Throughout this period slaves were traded openly in most cities. The town of Caffa in the Crimea was called the capital of the medieval slave trade.
