The Choctaw were a peace-loving people. They preferred to settle disputes by voting or by playing a game of stickball. They were noted for their farming skills; and were such good agriculturists that they often had enough food to trade with nearby tribes.
They are not as famous or well known as other Indian tribes because of their lack of agression. Although opposed to White American oppression, they used a more peaceful approach for their benefit.
Most native American populations (including the Shawnee) were based on a warrior society with warfare an essential part of life. Men could only gain prestige and respect by performing brave deeds in battle and recounting those deeds to the young boys - as an example to them of how they should behave themselves. The Shawnee had a reputation for being particularly aggressive and stubbornly warlike against white settlement in the Ohio country.
Pretending that natives were "peaceful" tribes or otherwise is simply to ignore the essential role of warriors in native societies.
In fact the Shawnees (like almost all native groups) could be cruel, savage and without mercy to anyone considered to be an enemy - and kind, generous and respectful to anyone considered to be a friend.
