Guerrilla warfare had nothing to do with it. The US fought guerrilla war itself back in 1775, 1861, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. It's just a tactic, anyone can utilize it. The war was lost because:
1. Couldn't invade the north
2. Couldn't use nukes
3. Couldn't stop the flow of men/material in RVN
This answer is so simple...it actually confuses historians.
Partly yes, the Viet Cong were trained to fight in swamps and jungles and were much more familiar with the territory than the U.S army also their AK's were much more realiable than the lousy American m-16's, but the main reason the U.S were unsuccessful was because of the misconception that they were fighting Vietnamese peasants who have no gun skill whatsoever and don't have the firepower that the U.S military does, they were wrong which is the simplest way to put it i guess.
