Yes, they were, due to the incredible richness of the Nile River Delta after the floods. That's how they survived; they farmed for about one season then lived off of that. However, at the end of the year, before their next farming season, they would often go into a period of famine. The Romans called Egypt the bread basket of the world. Without Egypts ability to produce surplus foods, the Roman Empire wouldn't have been able to feed its army.
