Yes. Most of the city was working class. Just because a person was poor, did not mean he was stupid. The poor could determine what might be coming and got out just as well as the wealthy.

We really do not know what the financial status of Nicholas was. However, it is doubtful if he was either rich or poor. He was probably middle class. Any wealth he might have had he gave to the poor. His parents died when he was still quite young and left him a large inheritance. He gave nearly all of it to the poor.
