We are led to believe that there probably were sophisticated robberies. Recently a horde of coins was unearthed in Britain that puzzled archaeologists. The coins were pure silver, but oddly made, even the name of the emperor was misspelled among other things. The theory is that they were part of a money/loot laundering scheme. They think that thieves had stolen silver objects, melted them down and made coins from the silver. In this particular case, their forger seemed to have been illiterate. Now if nitwits like that knew about a forging scheme, there is no reason to think that other, more intelligent thieves might not have had the sophistication to do it right.
