After they exhausted the food supplies they brought with them, the Jamestown colonists had no ready source of food except for what they could grow themselves or the fish and game they could kill.
He basically saved the ailing colony. By 1608 half of the colonists in Jamestown had died, leaving only fifty three emaciated survivors. John Smith came to Jamestown and was elected president in September of 1608. He enforced military discipline and negotiated with the Indians for food for the colony. He later returned back to England and the colony came close to collapse again. If you want to read more about Jamestown, I'd suggest reading Paul Johnson's History of the American People pages 23-28.
