What's it like going through Puberty?

It's something that takes several years to pass, and it's when you change from a child into an adult. Most of the changes happen slowly so you do not really notice them. It's not usually painful at all and it's nothing to worry about as it is all natural and normal. You can't hurry it up or slow it down and it is different for everyone. Some may go through puberty before others of the same age. Girls tend to go through puberty earlier and quicker than boys though.

Hormones begin the process of enlarging a girls breasts or a boys testicles at first and this will most likely be the first things you notice. Pubic hair will follow this, then a girl will get her menarche (first period). This is when she will see some blood when she goes to the toilet. It's all normal. She will need to ask mom for pads or liners. Boys will get more erections, and at inappropriate times also. The hormones circulating through the body will give rise to noticing the opposite sex more. Both boys and girls, but not all, can become confused about their sexual identity during puberty and this is normal also. They can have crushes on peers or celebrities of their own gender or even both genders. Sexual urges and masturbation will become regular in boys and many girls. A boys penis will start to grow longer then thicker. His voice will break and become a little deeper in tone. Growth spurts will be happening in boys and girls through all this too. Both boys and girls will become more moody and conscious of their needed privacy. They may need to sleep longer than before. They become more social with friends and less with family, but still dependant on it. They think they know more than they really do, and shun good advice from adults. They push their boundaries constantly, sometimes causing arguments with family. Also, they become lazy and smelly and need to wash more often to keep their hygeine levels up. They may get dizzy spells or nosebleeds more often. Some may get growing pains in legs, arms chest or back, but not all.

All this is normal for teenagers going through Puberty and becoming more independant from parents.
