For example, if you work at a fancy restaurant then you're likely not allowed to take Valentine's Day off because many people go out to eat that day, so the restaurant will want all staff to be working. Likewise, if you work in a toy store you probably can't take Black Friday off because it's the biggest shopping day of the year.
If somebody is telling you that you can't have time off because it's a key period, then for some reason the business considers it vital that everyone is working during that time.
