It doesn't matter which direction you face while meditating. It doesn't matter how you sit, what you wear or when you meditate.
That's up to you. The wise man would say that it is better to learn to see only with the inner eye when meditating - if at all.

If you are noticing you are tense while meditating, simply notice the tension. Accept it from your heart. The key while meditating is to be a non-judgmental observer. Notice, be present, and accept. Do not try to change or fix anything.

Different people experience different things when they meditate. It sounds like you have been meditating, and you have seen stars. Is that right? After fifteen years of meditating, I can tell you the mind will create all kinds of thoughts, images, and dreams to distract you from simply being present to what is. I have seen all kinds of stuff, and thought all kinds of thoughts while meditating. What I have learned is all of it is not significant. It is all the same: it is all mind stuff. And meditation is about coming into contact with that which is *beyond the mind.* So when you see stars, simply watch the stars, just like you would watch a thought or a feeling. This too shall pass.

My dictionary defines cogitate as follows: "think deeply about something; meditate or reflect." In my opinion, this is incorrect in part. For me, the word cogitate means think deeply. Meditation has *nothing* to do with thinking. Meditation is about awareness, about that which lays beyond mind, beyond thought, beyond feeling. So, no, do not confuse meditating with cogitating. Why not find a meditation technique that "feels right" and give it a try for a while?
