The case of The People of CA v. William Alford, 1899 saw some interesting evidence presented to the jury. Alford accused of killing a prominent attorney named Jay Hunter had the deck stacked against him. With very little money he was barely able to hire an inexperienced young lawyer named Earl Rogers. What Rogers lacked in experience he made up for in brains. His client claimed self defense and the wiley young attorney had the medical examiner bring in the victim's intestines that were floating in a jar of alcohol. He preceded to show that the bullet had entered the victim as he was bent over Alford beating him with his walking stick. The prosecutor almost had a stroke but the jury aquitted Mr. Alford and Mr. Rogers' star was on the rise. He would later defend Clarance Darrow in his bribery case and was asked by film star Fatty Arbuckle to defend him in his murder trial for the killing of actress Virginia Rappe.

Who was the first accused witch to be brought to trail and what qualities did she have that made her a likely candidate in the Salem Witch Trials?

That would be Bridget Bishop. She was the first brought to trial because they couldn't use spectral evidence in court yet, which was the evidence on which most, if not nearly all, the accused were convicted and they only had normal "evidence" for Bishop. However, like all the victims, she cannot be connected by a series of traits of a single trait to the of accused. Accusations were sporadic.
