The pit bull is a non-official separate breed - to get pit bull puppies you breed two pit bulls together. However, there is no AKC registration available for this breed (currently) as it is not recognized as a separate breed.

∙ 14y agomake no mistake about this. Only a pitbull breed male and female makes a pitbull as we know them today. To make a dog breed, lots of years are needed and most times the grandchildren of the person that started breeding them finish to come with the breed.

When people hear pit bull, however, generally they are thinking of the Staffordshire Terrier, or if you're using AKC standards, either the American Staffordshire Terrier or the American Pit Bull Terrier. Both breeds where origionally one in the same, and UKC still consideres the APBT to just be an American Staffordshire Terrier.
The Staffy's origins are debatable, but the most popular theory is that they where origionally came from England's Bulldogs around the 19th century, as the bulldog's then look more akin to what you might think of when you hear "pit bull" then the smooshed faced bulldog we know and love today.
Another popular theory is that the English Terrier or the Fox Terrier helped to bring the breed about, mostly using the rationality that the terrier mixed with the bulldog would help the dog perform it's bull-baiting duties better.

Bulldog and any terrier make a pitbull.Terriers come in different sizes thats what makes the dog tall or short. The bulldog is what makes the pitbull muscular and wide.
