It depends on whether you are talking about light or pigment. With light the primary colours are red, green & blue. With pigment (ink or paint) the primary colours are cyan (blue), magenta (pinky red) & yellowplus there is nearly always a black in printing as it is very difficult to make pure black with the primary colours The primary colours for pigment are red, yellow and blue. The secondary colours are purple, orange and green. Black is NOT a colour, it is a shade/tone.

From an artist's point of view the three primary colours are RED, YELLOW, AND BLUE. They are "primary colours" because all the other hues can be created by mixing these three colors (like mixing red and yellow gives you orange, yellow+blue=green, red+blue=voilet and so on). On the other hand you cannot mix any other colour to get a primary colour. (try it!, you can mix orange with green Violet with lavender white with green and so on but you will never end up with RED, YELLOW AND BLUE).

When it comes to transmitted light, however, the 3 primary colours are RED, BLUE and GREEN. If you look at your cololr TV screen very closely - maybe with a magnifying glass, you will see that they have used those three colors.

The reason for the difference is that with pigments - like pencils, crayons, paints, etc. - you are creating color by subtraction. Each pigment absorbs certain wavelengths and reflects others. When you mix two primary color pigments, you get a mixture of what is absorbed and what is reflected. If you mix them all together, you are absorbing almost all the colors so you get something very dark (usually a dark brown since all the pigments reflect SOME light)

With transmitted light, you are working strictly with creating color by addition - for example: adding green light to red light yeilds the visual spectrum we percieve as yellow. When you add all the colors together, you get "white light".
