The British searched for the Northwest Passage. A British sea captain arrived in the colonial port of Plymouth, Massachusetts. His name was James Cook. He was already a famous explorer who had been around the world twice, in BOTH directions. Cook had even discovered a group of islands in the Pacific that he renamed the Hawaiian Island.

Captain Francis Crozier found the Northwest Passage, though many believe it was Sir John Franklin. Franklin actually died before reaching the passage, leaving Captain Crozier in command of the two ships, Erebus and Terror, and who lead the men across the Simpson Strait, the final step of the Northwest passage.

The Louisiana Purchase was the land west of the Mississippi River that was bought from Napoleon while he was trying to take over Europe. Lewis and Clark went out on a mission across the Louisiana Purchase to find the Northwest Passage. (There mission was a failure, since there was no Northwest Passage).
Because people wanted to find an easier route for trade. The didn't want to use a boat to travel across the Pacific Ocean and trade.
The only country (continent) west of Alaska (across the Bering Strait) is Russia. There is a small American island, Little Diomede Island, in between.
The French were the Europeans that came to America to engage in the fur trade. This was after several people tried to find a Northwest Passage across the United States.
