There are two species of hairy-nosed wombats.
The Southern hairy-nosed wombat is the faunal emblem of the state of South Australia. It is found in southern areas of South and Western Australia, mostly along the Nullarbor Plain and as far east as the Murray River flats.
The Northern hairy-nosed wombat is now limited to just Queensland, although it used to also be found further south. Its current distribution is now almost exclusively in and around the Epping Forest National park near Clermont in central Queensland.
The hairy-nosed wombat (not the common wombat) is the official emblem of South Australia.
