A very good question. When we hear "overweight" we tend to think of someone who has excessive body fat. But not too many really take the time to ask "what is considered overweight." The answer is a bit sketchy because everyone is built different. But for average person, we can refer to a scale called the "Body Mass Index" or BMI. The scale is listed in columns which are categorized by health. These colums each have ranges of weight that fall into these categories, based on a person's height. So, in order to find you BMI, you would look for your height, look for your weight in the same row, and see which column if falls under. However, this isn't always completely accurate as some people build large amounts of muscle. But for the average person, it's a good tool. If you would like to quickly calculate your BMI, visit the following address: http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ Another way that you can tell if you or another is overweight is by good ol' fashion judgement. But you may also want to keep in mind these questions: * Am I genetically predisposed to becomming overweight because of my race? * Does this run in my family genes? * Am I eating right? * What is the average weight of people my height and age? And for those of you who may feel that you are overweight, consider the following: * Am I really overweight? * What can I do to live a healthier lifestyle? * What is a healthy weight for me? And the bottom line is, if you're unsure do not hesitate to ask a medical professional.

A BMI over 20 is considered "high normal."

over 20 is not a high BMI, considering woman cant reproduce when theyre under 18, id say like 23 would be starting to get a little heavy. I think the person who replyed to this first has a distorted image of "a few extra pounds".

A normal bmi is in the range 18.5 - 25, try http://whatismybmi.co.uk which tells you your bmi plus how many pounds you need to lose or gain to have a normal bmi.

* Excessive width. * Weight is related to height and body composition, rather than just height. What counts more than your weight is your percentage of body fat. For more information see the page links, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.

The medical definition of overweight is having the Body Mass Index (BMI) of about 25-30. Above 30 is considered obese. There is BMI calculator on the internet. It's not a perfect test, but then no screening test is perfect. It's a good guideline for the average person. It's not accurate if you're very muscular.

What I notice is that people often are very surprised when they see their recommended weight base on the BMI range of 20-25. Many say it's too skinny!!! I think this is due to the normalization of overweight and obesity in the society. Everybody is so used to see everybody else with overweight so that it becomes normal for overweight to be viewed and normal and optimal weight as below normal.

Check your body mass index (BMI). Just go into Google search and type 'BMI calculator'. If its more than 30, you're obese. If its above 25.5 you're just overweight. A good BMI is about 20. Try to aim for that.
