There are 2 types of batteries I have come across on VW remotes. The remotes look identical, with the difference of 1 or 2 batteries. These are flat batteries about the size of a nickle. Before going out and getting one. Take apart your remote to see what one you have, and the take the battery to the store with you.
Taking apart the remote:
1: Open the spade key. Then firmly grip the top half and the bottom half and pull. You should have the top half with the key and the bottom half with the buttons.
2. With the button half, in the grooved side where the key normally rests, use a large screwdriver or even your fingers if your manly enough, and pry apart the button half. Inside you'll find a circuit board, and the battery on the backside half. Pay attention the back FLAT side of the battery is the + and goes to the backside of the remote.
3. A). If you have 1 battery, you will have 3 metal edges folding slightly over the edge of the battery. Using a pair of tweezers, you can pry these back slightly, and then pry your batteries out.
B). If you have 2 batteries, you won't see any metal folding over the batteries. You can simply hold it a few inches above a surface (table), and give it a flick with your finger. Or you can pry them out with very small screwdriver or tweezers.
4. Replace your battery(ies), snap remote back together. If your remote is worn and doesn't want to hold together well, use a dab of silicone.

There is nothing to reset. Just change the battery and if you have it in correctly it will work.
