Francisco Jiménez was 4 when his father dug a hole under the fence separating Mexico and the United States and led his family through to a new life. By age 6, Francisco was working in the fields of California, trying to help the family dig out of poverty as they migrated around the state in search of work.
Francisco always lived in fear that his family would get deported back to Mexico because he loved school so much that he wouldn't want to go back to Mexico because he knew that he wouldn't get a good education there. One day his fear became a nightmare when the Immigration patrol came to his school looking for him. His teacher sadly pointed him out of her class. From there the man that took Panchito out of class went for Roberto at his school. As Roberto got into the car he said," Nos agarraron Panchito"(They caught us Panchito). The Immigration patrol was already in the place that Franciscos family was working in, but Papa asked them if they could just have one more day to pack all their stuff and leave for Mexico by themselves. After that they went to Guadalajara where they stayed in Panchito's aunt, Chana, until they could get legal papers into the U.S. When they got their papers they where asked to go to Florida where they would run some tests if they could be allowed in. They passed the physical exams and where allowed in, they then went back to California where he then graduated from school to high school. His family was still facing tough times and Papa had his back pains again after losing the crop sharing job that he just got and what stinks was that things where getting better but they then became worst than before so he got a job as a janitor but then for working too hard he got the kissing decease but he never gave up and still went to school. For his great efforts he got a Scholarship from the rotary club. Trampita then took over the janitor job to help the family because Francisco had the kissing decease. Then Roberto married his girlfriend and left the family to Panchito but soon after he then went to the University leaving the family alone and felt bad because he was living happily there while his family still struggled. Francisco is now a Fay Boyle Professor at Santa Clara University.
