What is a biographical sketch?

Biographical Sketch (Biosketch) Defined

A biosketch is a brief summary of you or someone else's professional /educational accomplishments, publications, and affiliations--an abbreviated curriculum vitae--meant to highlight important aspects of your training, experience, and areas of interest.

In plain words...it's a "light sketch" of a persons life.

Other contributors have said:

I was taught that a biography is about someone else while an autobiography is about one's self. So an autobiographical sketch would be a biosketch of your own life while a biographical sketch is a biosketch of anybody else's life.

Just describe the person and write what main accomplishments the person has done. Has he won Prizes like Nobel? Or has he written books?

Scientists
Alexander Fleming

Who was Alexander Fleming?

Alexander Fleming was a scientist, born near Darvel in Ayrshire, Scotland, on 6 August 1881. He was educated at St Mary's Hospital medical school in London until World War I. Whilst here, he gained a great deal of experience in a battlefield hospital in France. He observed firsthand the effects of infections in dying soldiers, and this motivated him to increase his efforts to find an effective means of fighting infection.

Fleming is known for his discovery of the antibiotic substance penicillin from the fungus Penicillium notatum in 1928, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945. What is more remarkable was how this discovery came about quite by accident.

Fleming was an untidy worker, often leaving his equipment uncleaned. When he went away for a holiday during 1828, he left a clutter of plates growing various bacteria lying about his desk. After he returned, whilst working on an influenza virus he noticed that mould had grown on a staphylococcus culture plate. Not only that, the mould had created a bacteria-free circle around itself. Working on an hypothesis, he experimented further to determine that even a weaker-strength mould culture prevented growth of staphylococci. Thus, Fleming initiated the development and practice of antibiotic therapy for infectious diseases.

Malcolm X was a black man who was assassinated. When he was younger his father was killed and his mother was later put in a mental hospital. He later turned to crime and was sentenced to ten years in prison. While there he was converted to Islam. When he got out of prison he started preaching to people about Islam. His real name was Malcolm Little but he changed it to Malcolm X. He did this because he believed that Little was not his real name but passed down by his ancestors when they were brought to America and were forced to be slaves. So in changing his last name to X it was a sign for unknown.

What is a phase autobiography?

A phase autobiography is a personal story that recounts different times during your life. Think of it as a snapshot of you. A photo captures one moment in time, so structure your phase autobiography so it captures your life in a similar way. The phase can range anywhere from a single one-day event to a period of several months or years, but ultimately it should tell a story.

What is an example of an autobiography?

An Autobiography is a piece of writing about yourself.

For example:

Reach for the Moon by Buzz Aldrin.

You can write an autobiography that is a few pages to as many as you like telling about your own life. Unlike a biography, an autobiography is not about someone else, but about yourself. Strictly speaking, an autobiography is your life story written by yourself. Some writings do not set out to tell a life story but have autobiographical elements. Therefore, a diary or journal does not normally qualify as an autobiography, although its contents are autobiographical. Increasingly relatively young people write 'autobiographies' even though they are only able to write about quite short periods of their lives.

Answer:

The Confessions by Jean Jacques Rousseau is an excellent example of an autobiography.

Historia Calamitatum by Peter Abelard is another good example.

My Apprenticeship by Beatrice Webb is yet another excellent example.

Answer:

One of the most famous autobiographies is The Diary of a Young Girl (also known as The Diary of Anne Frank).

How do you write a self biography?

That would be an autobiography. When you write autobiography, you can make your own rules. Your life story is your own; write it whatever way makes sense to you.

If it's for a personal statement for a college application (as the question category suggests), probably with a word limit, one good idea is to find a theme or pattern that you can use to organize it. For instance, one applicant who was interested in social work wrote about how community service had always been a part of his life because his parents were activists; he used this thread to relate incidents from his life. It was no accident that it tied into his stated interest in furthering his education.

Another applicant was heading for a psychology degree. She wrote about how people had helped her at key points in her life and how this experience had shaped her interest in her future study.

The key is selectivity. You can't tell everything. Along with basic facts, you want to pick out some things that paint a picture of you with some depth and dimensions and show you as an attractive candidate for admission. Choosing some theme or thread that runs through your life can help you tell the story without trying to cram in a record of everything you ever did.

I agree an autobiography may be written in any style the writer chooses and doesn't necessarily have to follow a strict chronological standard. It is the writer's expression of his or her perception of their life and how they experienced it.

I don't agree with the seeming cool detachment applied to an autobiographies description as stated above. It is referred to as a tool used to further an education or a career (Although they may well lend to both positively). Writing an autobiography necessarily involves studying the life you have lived and trying to capture it as it was affected at various times of your life. If you can capture perceptions you had as a child and compare them to ones you had as a teen, then as young adults and then as middle age and on, a pattern will emerge enabling the audience can "see" how you changed over time. With clear descriptions of your life experiences and circumstances, why your perceptions evolved as they did.

Since not all people writing autobiographies aren't celebrities or well known people, having a strong purpose for writing your story is helpful. Who is your audience? What are you trying to share and why? An autobiography can be used to inspire, teach, cause laughter or or describe dark, melodramatic events. What does the writer hope his/her audience will gain from the description of their life?

If you don't consider yourself, your life and life changes with an eye on responsibility to delivering something of interest or value to the reading audience, you are writing a journal's description of yourself and your life. This is absolutely a valuable piece of work. The art of knowing your self is challenging and provides clarity of vision you may not attain other wise. In this case the writing helps the writer.

What should be included in a Motion to Deconsolidate?

I don't know what district you live in, or whether your particular district prefers one form over another. You can check with your local bankruptcy clerk and see if they have a form for Motions to Deconsolidate they prefer. One of the forms for deconsildation I have seen in Indiana says this: UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY COURT SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF INDIANA INDIANAPOLIS DIVISION In re: ) ) JOHN & JANE DOE, ) CASE NO. 05-12345-BHL-13) ) Debtors. ) MOTION TO DECONSOLIDATE BANKRUPTCY CASE Come Now the Debtors, pro se, and move to deconsolidate the above-captioned bankruptcy case into two separate bankruptcy cases, and in support hereof now state: 1. That Debtors are getting divorced. 2. That Debtor John Doe desires to convert to Chapter 7, but Debtor Jane Doe wants to remain in Chapter 13, so the instant case needs to be deconsolidated so that Debtor John Doe may then file his Notice of Conversion to Chapter 7. WHEREFORE, Debtors pray that the Court deconsolidate the above-captioned Chapter 13 case and for all other relief as may be just and proper in the premises. Respectfully submitted, ______________________ John Doe, Debtor _______________________ Jane Doe, Debtor The Court also charges a fee to deconsolidate that has to accompany the motion. Deconsolidation can cause complications in a case, so it is generally advisable to discuss it with an attorney who practices in your district prior to filing it (or have an attorney file it for you). Please be advised that nothing in this posting or in any other posting by me or my agent(s) should be construed as legal advice nor the formation of an attorney-client relationship. I am merely stating facts as I understand them, and I am not recommending any course of action or inaction to any person. It is advisable to consult an attorney in a face-to-face consultation prior to taking any action or inaction. I do not warrant the accuracy of any information herein.

How would you describe yourself?

When you are asked to describe yourself, you do it the same way you describe any other person. Start with physical details, add some personal information, and maybe put in your internal self -- personality, hopes and dreams, strengths and weaknesses.

Only you can describe yourself. Write down a few important thing about you, then combine them into an answer to the question.

Here are some examples to think about:

1. Age

2. Where you were born

3. Color of Hair, Eyes, Height and weight.

3. Any distinguishing marks, like tattoos.

4. What you enjoy doing.

5. What you dislike doing.

6. Employment or school you attend.

7. What are your favourite hobbies

8. What foods do you like or dislike
In order to describe yourself, think of words that best describe your personality, traits, and physical looks. For example, if you are not the type that likes to socialize much, you may describe yourself as shy and timid.

What are the steps for writing an autobiography?

  1. A good way to begin your autobiography (life history) is to write all the years, in numbers you have been alive, perhaps one year per page in a notebook (or, use index cards for each event). Then, think back about anything that you remember; significant events, friends, etc. that are associated with the particular year. Then, expand upon them. Use the completed notebook, all years filled in with what happened during them; to begin a more formal work. Title: The story of my life.
  2. Make lists ... lots of lists. List important dates from your birth through now. List everyone that you have ever known. List all your pets. List the vacations you have taken. List major illnesses. List the places where you have lived and the schools you attended. List any important highlights in your life. Remember to include things like first day of school, first date, first job.
  3. Beside each event, jot down a short description or interesting fact. This part does not need to be grammatically correct yet, or even in full sentences. Remember to include emotions - how did it feel when you rode a bike for the first time or lost your grandmother?
  4. Narrow each list down to around ten items - choose only the most important events in your life to save in the autobiography. Remember that your autobiography should include three basic parts: Who you are, What life means to you, and Your outlook for the future.
  5. Read over the lists and combine them into a story, beginning with your birth. Copy down all the facts, this time putting them into correct grammar and checking your spelling and punctuation. Add more details if you think of them.
