In May of 1863, Lieutenant General James Longstreet proposed to President Davis and Secretary of War, Seddon, that his corps in Virginia along with elements of Johnston's western forces reinforce Braxton Bragg in Tennessee. Longstreet suggested an attack by the Army of Tennessee into Ohio in order to draw General Grant from his then siege on Vicksburg, and force the Union armies well back into their own territory. Davis was preoccupied with Lee's plans for Pennsylvania and tabled Longstreet's proposal.

Confederate General Edward Porter Alexander proposed in 1863 that the Confederacy abandon the idea of trying to protect Confederate territory that was too far away. This would of course mean places such as Vicksburg. Alexander was not the first general to propose this. In February of 1862, General Braxton Bragg believed that a "compact" area of vital places be set for protection. Both he and Alexander believed that a "compacted" Confederacy would create a stronger and more dangerous opponent for the North.
In June of 1863, the Confederate Army of Tennessee was led by General Braxton Bragg. He was the commanding general at the Battle of Chickamauga that resulted in a Southern victory in September, 1863. This battle would rank as one of the bloodiest ones in the US Civil War.
The Battle of Chancellorsville was a dramatic victory for the Confederacy. Against heavy odds, Confederate General Robert E. Lee beat Union General Joseph Hooker. The battle was in Virginia and ended on May 6, 1863. It paved the way for Lee's invasion raid on Pennsylvania late in June 1863.
