It's not known for certain what the cause of her death was, but it's thought to have been a form of blood poisoning. She died on 24th March 1603, in her 70th year- she had been in serious physical and mental decline for a couple of years beforehand, growing steadily weaker and mentally infirm, and retiring from the public eye. She became severely depressed following the death of some of her closest friends and advisors at the end of the 16th Century, most especially Lord Burghley and Sir Christopher Walsingham. She also never got over having to have her favourite courtier, the Earl of Essex, executed in 1601 for leading a plot against her.
