yorkie
(new writer) No, a yorkie is really a Yorkshire Terrier from Yorkshire, a county in England. We have a lot of breeds though: American water spaniel, Catahoula leopard dog, blue tick hound, redbone hound, black and tan coonhound, treeing walker hound, Alaskan malemute, Australian shepherd (really--the parent stock came from Australia, but the breed was developed here!), American Staffordshire terrier, Chesapeke Bay retriever, Boston "terrier," American fox hound, American cocker spaniel, Blackmouth cur, mountain cur, mountain feist, Plott hound, Shiloh shepherd. Some of these are not recognized by the American Kennel Club--they are recognized by other clubs like the American Rare Breeds Association or the United Kennel Club. The UKC recognizes most AKC clubs but also a lot of what you might call "folk breeds"--traditional working or practical breeds from remote parts of the country. ARBA of course does rare breeds. Many ARBA and UKC breeds later get AKC recognition also.
