Natural selection is the nonrandom survival and reproductive success of randomly varying organisms.

Evolution is the change in allele frequency over time in a population of organisms.

So, the individual naturally selected will leave more decedents in the population and his descendents will have the traits that made him survive and reproduce better and this will change the allele frequency of the population, the population's gene pool, and lead to evolution in this population.

When organisms have a genetic difference from other organisms, giving them an advantage, they do better as a species and more of them are able to live longer. The more organisms there are in a species and the longer they live, the more likely it is they will produce offspring. This means that populations of organisms that are better adapted to their environment grow. They also use more food, space, and other things. Other species are not able to compete effectively and their populations shrink. Over many generations, the better species takes over and the other species shrink in size or disappear altogether. As time goes on, different features of organisms allow them to have an advantage over other organisms and this feature is passed down until all the organisms in the species have it. This happens with many different features and slowly the species evolves into something completely different. A classic example is the colour of English moths over the Industrial Revolution. Originally most of the moths were whitish to blend in with local tree bark colours, a few were darker. As the soot and grunge from coal smoke darkened these surfaces, successive generations of moths had a higher proportion of moths with darker wings to blend in better. The supposition was that the lighter moths were taken out of the breeding race as birds could find them on dark surfaces and eat them.

Natural selection, which is also called survival of the fittest, plays a stronger role in evolution than any other factor. The organisms with the strongest characteristics to enable survival mate and produce offspring. Thus, the creatures with the strongest iciosyncrasies to enable survival are the ones who produce the most offspring, thus playing the strongest role in evolution and continuation of its specific characteristics.

Are species are just variations and the selecting agent is the environment. Let us use a classic example. Let us suppose that a population of organisms varied, for simplicity, in this one trait; amount of hair. Some were vary hairy and some were smooth and most were between those two extremes. Now the immediate environment gets progressively colder. Those who were tending toward the hairy would be naturally selected to be more reproductively successful in this environment and pass these traits for success on to the next generation. That would be natural selection causing evolution. The change in allele frequency over time in a population of organisms.

Mutations give variety, which increases a species' chance of adapting to change, as at least some individuals in the species might have the required mutation to survive in the new environment.

Whether a mutation will be "good" will depend on where the individual with that mutation is. (eg a moth with the mutation for light wings will do well in a non-polluted environment, while not so well in a polluted environment, while for a dark coloured moth the "good" environment would be the opposite).

Natural selection occurs (in part) due to mutations. If you're just that tiny bit better at hiding, or retaining energy, or at whatever gives you an edge in your environment then you're more likely to survive long enough toi pass along your genes (and thus whatever trait you had that gave you an advantage) on to a new generation, which will then pass it on to the next, and the next....
