The beeping noise is your computer's error sound. It in fact has nothing to do with GIMP. It won't beep when you give your computer something to backspace.
GIMP is virus-free, it didn't crash my computer. But if your computer is unstable, has little memory left, or is just plain old, GIMP might crash more often than usual. Image processing takes a lot of computer power, so it wouldn't work well if you're using a junky computer.
You must save the template somewhere on your computer that you will remember. After opening GIMP, go to "File" then "Open" and then find the file on your computer and then double click it. thegimpking.blogspot.com
Installing gimp is easy in Linux, you just run the install app called Synaptic. Search for gimp, and it will find it and install it. Note, most Linux systems come with Gimp now.

Due to the program's large filesize, downloading GIMP on a dial-up connection can take a very long time. If the computer is disconnected or has to redial, the process can be interrupted. However, it's not impossible. When I had dial-up, I downloaded gimp using the Firefox browser and left my computer on all night. In the morning the file was finally done and I installed it.
