Kush is a grass used for building mats and roofs of kutiyas in ancient India. Here is the story:
Once upon a time, Sita Mata was going for a bath in the nearby river (tamsa) and she asked Muni Valmiki to look after her son Lava and Muni nodded his head in agreement while he was busy in writing. After going some steps, Sita noticed that Muni was engrossed in writing, so she took Lava with her. After some time, when Muni looked to check on the child, he could not find Lava. Muni was not aware that Sita took Lava with her. Muni was worried that Sita would return and ask for her child. So he created a child from nearby kush (a grass used for building mats and roofs of kutiyas in ancient India) and gave life to it. When Sita returned, Muni was surprised to see that Lava was with her. He asked Sita to take care of both children as her own. Since Muni Valmiki used kush to make the child, the name Kusha was given. Also, Valmiki was born in the mind of Lord Brahma (god who creates universe) who has power to give life.
